If you know anything about BookTok, then you know how hard it is to choose a worthy book among all those hyped up. I decided to test the waters myself. Here’s my honest take on five of the most talked about BookTok books!
Let me tell you, this book is not for the faint of heart. If you hope the book will get happier as the plot develops, you might be disappointed. As we follow Jude’s and his friends’ lives, we discover dark secrets, journey through his memory, and see him to the end of his life. The depth of friendship, romance, trauma, and resilience make this read unforgettable. It is not an easy read, but one that definitely lives up to the hype.
This one was so much fun! If you love riddles, this one is directly up your alley. The book kept me engaged from start to finish and left me wanting more. In fact, I even bought the rest of the series right after I finished.
As we watch Avery try to discover the biggest secret of her life – why a stranger would leave her his fortune instead of his own family – the thrill of the twists and the romantic tension between enemies is the perfect seasoning. TikTok was spot-on with this recommendation—I enjoyed every moment.
This book completely stole my heart. It instantly became one of my favourites, putting me into a reading slump for months. It’s a gentle, thought-provoking story about a small café where you can travel back in time, but only until your coffee gets cold. Beautifully told, deeply emotional, and quietly profound, it is much like a warm cup of coffee on a rainy day. Without a doubt, this is the most worthy book I have ever read because of TikTok.
Despite all the praise, this book didn’t resonate with me. It follows the story of two very different medieval women who change each other’s lives after a single meeting. It has its merits, especially in its exploration of spirituality and introspection, but I’m not big on religious themes in my reading. It’s not a bad book, and it was an interesting alternative to my usual go-to genres, although it still didn’t excite me or leave an impression. If you enjoy philosophical reads, it may suit your taste, but for me, it didn’t quite live up to the hype.
This one, sadly, was the biggest letdown for me. The premise—a hide-and-seek game that turns deadly—sounded like it was written and waiting for me. But the execution just didn’t live up to it. The pacing was uneven, the characters felt underdeveloped, and the suspense was a miss. I really wanted to love it, but it ended up feeling flat, unfulfilling, and even frustrating. A promising concept, but ultimately, not worth the read.
Final Thoughts: BookTok can be a wild ride—sometimes it leads you to a treasure, and other times, to a dead end. For me, A Little Life, The Inheritance Games, and Before the Coffee Gets Cold were worth every moment, while For Thy Great Pain Have Mercy on My Little Pain wasn’t quite it, and Hide was a disappointing misfire. That’s the risk you take, but when BookTok gets it right, it’s truly magic.
